Cameron,2008 Arleys Leap Pinot Noir
$40.00
In the Cameron portfolio of Pinot Noirs, Arley’s Leap always seems to be the best wine for the money each vintage. Not to take anything away from their estate bottling of Clos Electrique Rouge, but with a little research you will find that Arley’s Leap consists of the same clones of Pinot Noir as Clos Electrique, and they were planted in similar soil just down the road on Abbey Ridge vineyard. This is a great wine to start with if you are just getting to know the Cameron style. In its youth it has the trademark dusty red fruit and musty cellar qualities. With time the aromatics of these wines become more soil driven and are reminiscent of damp earth and full of minerality. (300 cases produced)
You really have to live in proximity to Oregon wine country to understand all the eccentricities of Cameron Winery. For one, the winery is only open to the public twice a year (during Memorial Day Weekend and Thanksgiving Weekend) so the only way to guarantee access to their highly sought-after wines is to be there in person each and every weekend. Secondly, Cameron only self-distributes within Oregon, so if you’re from out of state, you’re most likely not going to find them in your local wine shop. Owner/Winemaker/Vineyard Manager John Paul is, amongst many other things, a fanatic about the wines of Burgundy and the processes that go into creating them. In the vineyard, he believes in dry farming (non-irrigation) and only uses sustainable farming practices when managing pests and botrytis. In the winery, he uses indigenous (natural) yeast whenever possible and allows his reserve Pinot Noirs/Chardonnays to age in neutral French oak barrels for an extended period of time (16+ months). The results are site specific wines with individual character, finesse and long-term aging ability.
